Hundreds of Players Chase EP Championship Glory

The Port Lincoln Golf and Seafood has been and gone, having brought with it hundreds of golfers, including a vast number of visitors hailing from courses such as Glenelg, Victor Harbor and Port Broughton.

The week finished with the EP Open with 91 Men taking part in the stellar conditions on Saturday. Off the stick, Dylan Vonderwall was victorious in the A grade, having shot 75 off the stick, one shot better than Gavin Cheriton in second. In the B grade, Phillip Remphrey shot 84 to stand tall ahead of Luke Murray who secured second through a play off. Kye Hussey won C grade having scored 92, one stroke ahead of Colin Clark. Clinton Sharfe scored handicap honours in A grade, having beaten Rick Kolega on a countback, both men having scored 71. Grant Woods took victory in the B grade handicap division, having scored 70 which was just enough to hold back Darryl Scharfe who scored 71. In C grade, Lindsay Gordon had 73 which kept him just ahead of Dave Krollig’s 74.

Not to be outdone in regards to spectacle, there was a five way tie, all competitors shooting 88 off the stick, in the Women’s EP Championship resulting in four additional holes for a winner to be determined. Eventually Helen George emerged as champion over Joanne Higgins. Winning on handicap was Jenny Macdonald who scored a Nett 68 ahead of over Cynthia Thompson who achieved a Nett of 74. In the Second Division, Rhondda Mayfield proved too much shooting 104, one shot ahead of Deb Sykes in second. Adie Fraser took home Nett honours through a countback with both her and Michelle Smith scoring a Nett of 75.

Over the Thursday and Friday, 66 men took part in the 36 Hole Championship. Beautiful conditions favoured everyone on the course to make the competition as tight as possible. Martin Hooper toughed it out in A grade having struck 150 over the two-day event with Gavin Cheriton close on his heels with 152. On the Nett score, Haydn Myers took first with a score of 143, two shots ahead of Clinton Scharfe. In B grade Tom Dawson shot 146 for victory, Steven Forstner coming in second after having missed out by a single shot. Mark Walsh and Trevor Grossman tied with their Nett score of 150, with Mark edging past Trevor on a countback. In the C Grade, Chris McGown top scored with 187, James Fuss coming in second with 188. On Nett, Haydon Manning secured victory with a score of 148, edging past William Ford who secured runner up with 153.

29 women took part in a heated competition over the two day period over two grades. Carolyn Cocks proved too much in A grade, scoring 177 off the stick, seven shots clear of Cynthia Thompson in second place. On Nett count, Joanne Higgins walked away a winner having scored 149 with Helen George close behind with 151. In the B grade, Deborah Sykes emerged victorious having shot 195 with Rhondda Mayfield just missing out with 199. On Nett, Annette Ballard proved too much for the competition having scored 148. Elaine Pierik came in second with a score of 151.

Wednesday hosted 61 men for a Stableford competition with some stellar scores shot by the leaders. Geoffrey Chambers secured 42 points, four ahead of Chris Brooks to secure A grade. Peter Leahy and Trevor Grossmann battled it out in B grade, Peter securing the win with 41 points, three ahead of Trevor. The competition was just as fierce in C grade with Lindsay Gordon scoring 43 points with Peter Meadows four shots off the pace.

Wednesday also saw 16 women take to the field with Mabel Crouch from Mildura taking honours in A grade with 33 points, a single shot ahead of Heather Darley. Adie Fraser held off Deidre Mann in the B grade by 2 points having scored a very neat 38 points.

40 men also played Stableford on the Tuesday with Scott Lombe winning A grade on a countback from Daniel Slorach, both men scoring 36 points. In the B grade, Bill Healy held off Mark Quinn, his 34 points getting him just over the line. Peter Leahy had the score of the day in C grade, an astonishing 44 points had him seven shots ahead of his nearest competitor in James Fuss.

The women took part in a Canadian Foursomes tournament in teams of two with the team of Heather Darley and Carolyn Cocks standing atop with a score of 75. Just behind them was the team of Joanne Higgins and Cynthia Thompson who settled for second with a score of 77.

The start of the week had 134 players teeing off in the annual Ambrose round, 34 teams in total taking place. The team of Todd George, Shaun Thomas, Norm Marks and Jake Norris were successful in the Men’s off the stick competition while Jeff Downs, Julie Downs, Bruce McDowell and Peter Moos were victorious in the Mixed competition. On Handicap, the team of Daniel Lorach, Todd Coleman, Kade Dufek and Tyron George were successful in the Men’s competition while Kay Freeth, Reeta Devi, Gavin Cheriton and Dylan Vanderwall claimed victory.
